The latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that UK drivers continue to favour subtle shades when choosing their new cars - with grey dominating the market for the eighth year in a row.

In 2025, more than 558,000 new cars in grey were registered, marking a record number and representing over a quarter (27.6 %) of all new registrations.

The Colour Rankings

While grey remains the top choice, other colours also held strong positions in the list of best-selling car paints:

  • Black came second with 464,369 registrations
  • Blue secured third palce, with 306,349 registrations
  • White remained in fourth place, with silver claiming fifth
  • Red fell to sixth place, lower than previous years

Joined together, the top three colours (grey, black and blue) accounted for almost two-thirds (65.8%) of all new cars joining UK roads in 2025.

A Surge in Green

Although sitting further down, green made the biggest gains among the top ten colours. Registrations of green cars jumped by 46.3 % compared to the previous year, reaching nearly 100,000 units - the highest in two decades. This rise in green cars aligns with another industry shift: green-tinted electric vehicles nearly doubled in number, with over 23,000 new electric vehicles (EVs) registered in green shades. That means one in every 20 new battery-electric vehicles was green in 2025 - a sharp increase from just one in 300 the year before.

What This Means

The data highlights how UK buyers tend to stick with neutral, understated colours, but there’s growing interest in more distinctive finishes, especially when linked to electrified vehicles. Manufacturers are responding by offering broader ranges of paints and options, letting buyers personalise their cars more than ever before.
