The BMW iX3 has been crowned What Car? Car of the Year 2026, taking the top spot at the annual awards, held in association with MotorEasy.

The award recognises the best new car launched over the past 12 months and was announced at a ceremony in London, often referred to as the motoring industry’s equivalent to the Oscars.

BMW’s latest success marks the fourth time the brand has won the overall Car of the Year title, following previous victories for the 5 series, 3 series and 7 series. It also represents the fifth fully electric vehicle to claim the top prize, underlining the growing strength of the EV market.

A major step for electric SUVs

The second-generation BMW iX3 was designed as a dedicated electric vehicle from the outset. It offers a claimed range of up to 500 miles thanks to its 108.7kWh battery, while rapid charging speeds allow drivers to add around 215 miles of range in just 10 minutes.

Judges praised the iX3 for delivering meaningful progress in both performance and usability within the premium electric SUV segment.

Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car? said the model stands out in one of the most competitive areas of the market, combining long range, rapid charging, improved software and strong driving dynamics with everyday comfort.

BMW welcomes industry recognition

David George, CEO of BMW Group UK and Ireland, said the award was particularly significant given What Car’s? reputation for independent testing.

He added that the iX3 represents the beginning of a new chapter for BMW, introducing major advances in technology, charging capability and range, while remaining true to the brand’s driving character.
